Century Sam Lake - September 19, 2021

14.5km, 736 meters elevation gain. Total time 7 hours.

Century Sam Lake is at the base of the Comox Glacier. I wanted to do this hike last weekend but they opened the gates later than they were supposed to and a bridge was out close to the trailhead. I wasn't sure I would have time to do it with previous plans.

Everything was wet from the nights rain but it didn't rain until the final 10 minutes of my hike! I even got some decent weather at the lake. I did get wet eventually because of the amount of water on the bushes that grew over and through the trail.

From the lower parking area, I made it to the lake in about 2.25 hours. I wasn't alone for too long. I met a guy from Switzerland and we left the lake to go explore the ice cave below.

The cave was awesome! We got maybe 150 feet into the cave or so before deciding to turn around. Water dripped and poured from the ceiling. I didn't want to push my luck too far. It is late in the season and that thing could collapse at any point.

I stuck around a little longer to take some pictures and have some lunch but didn't want to stay for too long. On the way down there was a few people who were late coming up the trail. I doubt all of them made it to the lake and if they did, they likely didn't have time to make it out before they close the logging gate!
